Twycross Zoo - Giraffe Habitat
The Challenge
Twycross Zoo wanted to create a new giraffe complex that would deliver two key objectives:
“Enhance visitor interaction and prioritise sustainability and animal welfare”
The challenge was unique as giraffes are among the tallest animals in the world, requiring specialised structures and spaces that allow them to thrive while ensuring safety and comfort for visitors.
Our Solution
RCA developed an innovative design that combined functionality, sustainability, and an immersive visitor experience. Key features included:
Purpose-Built Giraffe House: Designed to accommodate the height and behavioural needs of giraffes.
Wildlife Park Area: A spacious outdoor environment for natural roaming.
Raised Viewing Platforms: Allowing visitors to feed and interact with giraffes safely from an elevated position.
Sustainable Design Principles: Materials and systems chosen to minimise environmental impact while ensuring durability.
The Result
The project was a resounding success. The new giraffe complex attracted significant visitor numbers and provided a spacious, natural habitat that improved animal welfare. Twycross Zoo achieved its vision of creating an unforgettable experience for guests while setting a benchmark for sustainable zoological design.
