Twycross Zoo - Gibbon Forest

The Challenge

Twycross Zoo wanted to create a world-class attraction that would provide a natural, enriching habitat for four different species of gibbons while offering visitors an unforgettable experience. The challenge was complex:

“Each species of gibbons required separate living spaces, and the design needed to balance animal welfare, safety, and visitor engagement.”

Our Solution

RCA delivered an innovative design that combined functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. Key features included:

  • Specialised Living Spaces: A building designed with four wings, each featuring its own sleeping quarters above daytime living areas.

  • Natural Habitat Access: Integrated hatches allowing gibbons to move freely between indoor and outdoor environments.

  • Visitor Experience & Safety: Moats constructed around outdoor areas, enabling guests to get as close as five meters to the animals—separated only by water.

  • Sustainable Water System: A dedicated water supply feeding the moats and a river running throughout the site to maintain a natural feel.

The Result

The Gibbon Forest became a flagship attraction for Twycross Zoo, successfully recreating the gibbons’ natural habitat and attracting visitors from across the globe. The project set a new standard for immersive wildlife exhibits, blending animal welfare with an engaging visitor experience.
