Rhymney CET & AdBlue Scheme
The Challenge
Rhymney station in South Wales includes a rail siding that allows passenger trains to be serviced during both day and night. However, a critical capability was missing, a Controlled Emission Toilet (CET) facility. CET systems are essential for emptying train toilets and refilling water tanks, including potable water, ensuring hygiene and operational efficiency.
The challenge was compounded by the need to integrate the new CET system with the Wales Core Valley Lines rail upgrade, which meant standard CET modules could not be used. The solution had to maintain rail safety working distances and protect operational staff without compromising functionality.
Our Solution
Transport for Wales awarded RCA the design and build contract for a bespoke CET system. RCA delivered an innovative solution that included:
Purpose-Built Plant Room: Housing all CET infrastructure for reliability and ease of maintenance.
Slimline CET Design: Developed using advanced design modelling to fit within restricted space while meeting safety standards.
Integrated Load and Offload Points: Ensuring efficient servicing of trains without operational delays.
Safety Compliance: Maintaining rail safe working distances and protecting staff throughout the process..
The Result
The Rhymney CET scheme was successfully delivered, providing Transport for Wales with a modern, efficient, and safe solution for train servicing. The project set a new benchmark for CET system design in constrained environments, combining innovation with operational excellence.
