Alstom Widnes - Inspection Pit Upgrades

The Challenge

Alstom Widnes needed a new service pit with automated covers to support maintenance of Class 458 trains. The project had to be delivered within a live rail depot, which meant strict safety requirements and minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Access to the site was extremely limited, adding further complexity to the build.

Our Solution

RCA designed and detailed a pre-fabricated service pit, ensuring precision and efficiency during installation. To overcome site constraints, RCA implemented several innovative measures:

  • Constructed a Haul Road: Providing safe access for heavy equipment.

  • Installed a New Side Access Door: Enabling practical entry to the work area.

  • Pre-Fabricated Design: Reduced on-site construction time and minimised disruption.

The Result

Despite the challenges, RCA completed the entire programme in just 10 weeks, causing minimal disruption to depot operations. The new service pit, complete with automated covers, now supports efficient maintenance of Class 458 trains and sets a benchmark for delivering complex projects in live rail environments.
