Alstom Widnes - Pendolino Upgrade Project

The Challenge

Alstom Widnes was tasked with upgrading the former Virgin Pendolino fleet for the new Avanti franchise. The project required significant modifications within an active depot, including:

  • Construction of a 300m platform

  • Installation of side dock levellers

  • Creation of a new access road

  • Removal of the old high-level gantry

The key challenge was completing these works with minimal disruption to live rail operations, ensuring safety and efficiency throughout.

Our Solution

RCA was appointed as the main design-and-build contractor and implemented a strategy focused on prefabrication and precision planning. This approach included:

  • Extensive Stakeholder Coordination: Ensuring safety-critical procedures and operational continuity.

  • Prefabricated Components: Reducing on-site construction time and enabling installation around live rails using specialist plant and equipment.

  • Innovative Access Solutions: Creating safe working zones without impacting depot functionality.

The Result

The project was delivered in just six months, with zero disruption to depot operations. The upgraded facility now provides Alstom with a state-of-the-art depot, ensuring long-term efficiency and supporting the Avanti fleet for years to come.
