Chester Depot - Fuelling Road & AdBlue Scheme

The Challenge

As part of a major upgrade at Chester Depot, Transport for Wales needed a new fuelling road for its CAF 197 class trains, along with an integrated AdBlue tanking system. The solution had to be installed at the main depot entrance, which handles daily deliveries, making zero operational downtime a critical requirement.

Our Solution

RCA was appointed as the main design-and-build contractor and delivered a comprehensive solution that included:

  • New Fuelling Points: Connected via a complex piping system to a new fuel farm on the northeast side of the depot.

  • AdBlue Infrastructure: Dedicated tank with secure access for delivery tankers.

  • Optimised Layout: Extensive modelling determined the best location for tanks in the existing car park, with the plant room positioned adjacent to the AdBlue tanks.

  • Efficient Pipe Routing: Troughing routes installed to distribute pipework to the fuelling road.

To overcome the challenge of working at the depot’s busiest access point, RCA implemented a detailed traffic management plan, ensuring safety and continuity of operations throughout the project.

The Result

The project was completed successfully with zero downtime for the rail depot. Chester now benefits from a modern, efficient fuelling and AdBlue system that supports the new CAF 197 fleet and enhances operational reliability.
