Oxley Depot - Automated Train Scanner
The Challenge
Alstom needed a faster, more efficient way to inspect trains at its Oxley depot. Traditional visual inspections took approximately four hours per train, causing significant downtime and operational delays. The goal was to implement a solution that could reduce inspection time, improve accuracy, and minimise service disruptions—all within the constraints of an active depot where the main rail artery had to remain operational every night.
Our Solution
RCA designed and built a state-of-the-art train scanner system that automatically inspects trains as they enter the depot. This advanced technology checks critical components such as brake disc wear and alignments, then transmits the data to a control room where it is cross-referenced against previous scans. The system provides technicians with a detailed wear-and-tear log, enabling proactive maintenance planning.
Key innovations included:
Rapid Scanning Technology: Reducing inspection time from 4 hours to just 45 minutes.
Data Integration: Real-time logging and comparison with historical data for predictive maintenance.
Smart Construction Approach: Deep strip foundations using rapid-setting concrete allowed the rail line to be handed back nightly, ensuring uninterrupted depot operations.
Safety & Planning: Careful scheduling and overhead line isolations guaranteed a safe and efficient build.
