Tangerine Confectionary - Cleckheaton - Innovative Floor Strengthening

The Challenge

Tangerine, a leading manufacturer of confectionery products including wine gums and sports mixtures, faced a critical structural issue at its Cleckheaton factory. Built in the early 1900s, the aging plant showed severe deterioration, with the concrete floor delaminating due to the production process. Previous reports condemned the building, suggesting a complete rebuild—a solution that carried major planning implications and significant costs.

The challenge was clear:

“Restore structural integrity without halting production or incurring the expense of a new factory.”

Our Solution

Drawing on its expertise in bridge refurbishment, RCA implemented an innovative engineering approach inspired by techniques used on old rail bridges. The solution included:

  • Under-Slinging a New Deck: Installed beneath the existing structure to provide additional support.

  • Precision Coring: Drilled through the original floor from above to create channels for reinforcement.

  • High-Strength Grouting: Poured liquid strength grout into the new deck below, effectively creating a brand-new floor without demolition.

All work was carried out overnight, ensuring zero downtime for production and uninterrupted supply of the nation’s favourite confectionery.

The Result

The project delivered a cost-effective, time-efficient solution that extended the life of the Cleckheaton factory without disrupting operations. Lion avoided the expense and complexity of building a new facility, while RCA demonstrated how innovative engineering can solve even the most challenging structural problems.
