RCA Construction Breaks Ground at Derby Etches Park Depot
RCA Construction is proud to announce the commencement of essential infrastructure and technology installation works at the Derby Etches Park depot. This project represents a significant step forward in rail maintenance efficiency and safety for the region.
Working on behalf of Wabtec, who is delivering the broader scope of works for East Midlands Railway (EMR), RCA Construction is tasked with integrating cutting-edge monitoring systems alongside critical civil enhancements.
At the heart of this project is the installation of high-tech diagnostic equipment designed to streamline fleet inspections. The integration of these systems allows for real-time, automated monitoring of rolling stock health, reducing manual intervention and increasing depot throughput.
The scope of the technology installation includes:
KinetiX WheelView®: Precision imaging for wheel profile and condition monitoring.
KinetiX BrakeView® – Disc: Advanced automated inspection for brake disc integrity.
KinetiX BrakeView® – Pad: Specialised sensors to monitor brake pad wear and performance.
"This collaboration between RCA, Wabtec, and EMR highlights a shared commitment to innovation. By combining high-end diagnostic tech with reliable infrastructure, we are helping to ensure the EMR fleet remains safe, efficient, and ready for the tracks." - Kyle Knox, Project Manager at RCA Construction
In addition to the digital upgrades, RCA Construction is delivering a suite of civil engineering and site safety improvements. These works ensure the depot remains a facility capable of supporting modern rail operations:
New Troughing Routes: Robust cable management systems to support the depot’s expanding electrical and data needs, including installations of hollow sleepers to accommodate track cable crossings.
GRP Walkways: Lightweight, slip-resistant Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) paths to improve worker access and longevity.
Handrail Systems: Enhanced safety barrier installations to ensure a safe working environment.
Construction is now officially underway, with a dedicated team on-site to ensure minimal disruption to daily depot operations. The project is on track for a successful delivery, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2026.
RCA Construction is proud to be supporting Wabtec in its delivery promise to EMR. While the technical specifications outline the scope, the complexity of the works can only be fully appreciated through the fly-through visualisation provided below.
